Cement sector: Industry blames weight laws for falling sales

LAHORE:

The cement sector is complaining that due to strict laws and implementation by authorities of axle load limit – the total weight felt by the roadway for all wheels connected to a given axle – cement dispatches registered a decline of 1% in May to 2.888 million tons compared with 2.918 million tons in May.

Due to the restrictions, the industry is required to use more trucks to transport the same volumes of goods than previously when the limits were relaxed. All Pakistan Cement Manufacturing Association says that the axle load limit had created a transport shortage, which is affecting sales of cement and other commodities.

For decades, the laws were relaxed allowing the trucks to carry much higher load than presently. The association said that had not only created a shortage of transporters, but also increased expenses incurred by the cement producers on account of transportation, they said.
