A Pakistani, Yasir Ali Hashmi dominating the Indian Premier League Super Selector
After the first session of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Pakistani players have been totally ignored by the cash-rich league due to political reasons. However, considering the flair of cricket in Pakistan, it is virtually impossible for anyone to avoid any kind of an impact made by Pakistan in any cricket competition.
In every major cricketing event, ESPN holds a fantasy league, Super Selector, in which the members have to pick a certain number of players who they think are likely to perform in the tournament. The game basically tests the understanding and selection abilities of a person. To be on the safer side, more than 25,000 people take part in the league every year.
Considering the fact that no Pakistan player is taking part in the tournament, it is ironic that a young Pakistani, Yasir Ali Hashmi is currently holding the number one position in the Super Selector, with more than 2200 points after merely nine matches.
The game is very technical as each individual has a certain number of points out of which he has to buy the playing-eleven, with a restricted amount of transfers available. It is impossible to consistently do well in the league, unless or until you have proper knowledge about the game.
Yasir hails from Lahore and has played domestic cricket of Pakistan some time back. He represented Lahore Under-19s in national tournaments and was also a part of the National Cricket Academy in 2004. One thing which is noteworthy is the fact that T20 cricket was introduced in Pakistan and the players from Lahore and Karachi do play a lot of this format. This is one of the major reasons why he has experience and knowledge about the game, which proved vital in becoming the number one ranked Super Selector.
While talking to newspakistan.pk, Hashmi said that luck plays a massive role in this league as one has to gamble with some players but also feels that a person should have the ability to pick the right players for each team, which he thinks are going to perform in the given conditions.
Yasir said, “By the grace of Almighty, I have an eye to assess the abilities of a cricketer and this is because I have spent a lot of my life in grounds and have played alongside many Test cricketers. I know the game from inside and probably this gives me the edge over people, who have not played professional cricket.”
He further added that cricket authorities should change their negative attitude towards Pakistan cricket because no one can deny the services of the Green Shirts for the game.
“Pakistani cricketers bring a different flavour to the sport and ICC and BCCI should know that any event without Pakistani players is incomplete. Pakistan is a safe country for cricket. Bad incidents can happen anywhere in the world but it does not mean that you start to ignore that country. By doing this, you are actually doing a service for the terrorists,” Hashmi expressed.
