The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) claimed on Wednesday to have seized several tonnes of suspected ‘pig meat’ from Lahore, Express News reported.

“PFA officials carried out a raid near the Lahore Railway Station and recovered a huge quantity of suspicious meat after receiving reports of pig meat being supplied to the city,” Director General PFA Ayesha Mumtaz said.

“We have been receiving reports for some time that haram meat and the meat of dead animals is being supplied to food joints in the adjoining areas of Lahore,” she added.

Further, the DG PFA said that one suspect, who was allegedly involved in supplying the ‘suspicious’ meat, has been arrested and further investigations are being carried out.

Meanwhile, the suspected meat has been sent to a laboratory for DNA testing and final results will be shared with the media, the DG PFA said. The suspect was supplying the meat from Rawalpindi to Lahore and its neighbouring villages, she added.

The DG PFA has been playing an active role against unhygienic food being sold throughout the province especially in Lahore.

The food authority is inspecting outlets in all areas of the city including posh localities as well as places inhabited by middle and low-income classes. Besides the fast food outlets, confectioneries, roadside food stalls called Dhabas and loose milk supply are also being monitored by inspection teams of the authority.

In July, the PFA had sealed one of the outlets of California-based fast food chain, Fatburger, in Lahore owing to “spoiled meat and vegetables” present in their kitchen. According to a Facebook post by the authority, Ayesha Mumtaz sealed Fatburger’s MM Alam Road, Gulberg branch owing to spoiled meat with a “pungent smell, rotten vegetables in cold storage, as well as rancid oil being used for frying purposes”.
