Drought in Tharparkar: Sindh govt turns down Punjab’s relief offer

LAHORE: The Sindh government has turned down the relief aid offered by the Punjab government for the people of Tharparkar, sources told Express News on Saturday.

Drought in Tharparkar has claimed at least 122 children in the last three months.

On March 7, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had taken serious notice of the appalling number of child deaths.

Separately, Chief Justice of Pakistan Tassaduq Hussain Jillani had taken suo motu notice over the death of children due to acute malnutrition.

Observing that this is a serious violation of Article 9 of the constitution, the chief justice had said he may initiate proceedings to ensure the fundamental rights of the population of district Tharparkar under Article 184(3) of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Sindh High Court Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar had also taken notice and called for comments from the National Disaster Management Authority chief, the provincial chief secretary and secretary food, agriculture and livestock departments.
